I was speaking at a conference in America’s heartland. In those days I was a speaker that brought diversity to a conference speaker lineup. During the week-long conference, I was tasked with preaching through the book of Phillippians. I approached the text that reads, “But our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ….” I had just read John McCain’s biography. I was moved by his patriotism and devotion to America. I expressed my appreciation for McCain’s patriotism, and then I challenged the audience to embrace their heavenly citizenship as a matter of first importance. I articulated that this could mean standing against our American impulses when they are opposed to the cause of Jesus. I reminded the audience that the confession that “Jesus is Lord” is a political statement. To express it is to say, Caesar is not Lord. It’s a confession that aligns you with the politics of Jesus. I naively assumed that if our pledge of allegiance to Jesus were to come into conflict with our pledge of allegiance to America that Jesus would be our only choice. I was younger then. I was unaware that there were some whose American identity was so intertwined with their Christian identity that a distinction did not exist for them. Many wanted to remove me from the conference line up for my assertion. Some refused to attend my next session, which was the main session for the conference. I love America. I would, if called upon, fight for her freedom. However, only Jesus has freed me from sin. There is salvation in no other name. My devotion is first to Jesus. If there is a conflict between my politics and my savior, I pray the Lord Jesus will win without hesitation. I am sure that a key sign that Christ has won in my heart is love. Love of my neighbor and love of my enemy will be fruit to be looking for. Jesus said that we can judge authentic Christianity by looking at the fruit. Lord Jesus, bear your fruit in my life. Help me to love like you. I have no other Lord but you. Help me to seek first your kingdom.」1月8日 13時54分
