American Airlines says it will no longer allow emotional support animals starting next week. Airlines "are not required to recognize emotional support animals as service animals and may treat them as pets," according to new regulations from the Department of Transportation. Concern that passengers were fraudulently passing off their pets as the more loosely defined and fee-free category of emotional support animals is one reason airlines asked the DOT to review this issue. In December, Alaska Airlines announced that it will also no longer accept emotional support animals.⁠
