The birthplace of that bare-bones sound blasted onto the 1970s New York music scene at @cbgbofficial. Originally a biker bar, owner Hilly Kristal unintentionally turned the space into a breeding ground for punk and new wave. Locals were the ones who actually gave Kristal the idea of booking bands.

Up and coming artists like the Ramones, Blondie, Patti Smith, Misfits and more flocked to CBGB’s as Kristal had two simple rules: only original music could be played and bands had to move their own equipment. Throughout the 80s and 90s, the venue managed to book numerous popular bands but in 2006 CBGB closed its doors. The final show was played by @thisispattismith on October 15.

Though many styles and movements were born in CBGB, they all shared the same sonic DNA. If it doesn’t make your room shake is it really punk?
