The last of a golden era violinist, Ivry Gitlis lived a fruitful 98 years and throughout his wide-spanning career, he had met and worked with musical luminaries such as Bronisław Huberman (founder of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra @israel_philharmonic), Jascha Heifetz and Carl Flesch, among many others.

His faithful companion, the 1713 "Sancy" Stradivari, which he acquired in 1956, had accompanied him for close to 65 years in thousands of concerts around the world. Gitlis remained true to the "old school" style of violin playing with his brilliant improvisations, unique vibrato and musical phrases in his concerts and recordings.

To put things into perspective, Gitlis was 9 years old when the great Belgian master Eugène Ysaÿe passed away in 1931. He was 17 years old during the outbreak of World War 2 in 1939 and was from an era where clean drinking water was a privilege. Hand written letters (which took ages to arrive to their intended recipient) formed the majority of communication and televisions were still in it's infancy. He lived till the digital age where messages could be sent in seconds and concerts could be enjoyed online regardless of location.

Imagine all of his envious musical colleagues who didn't live to see this technologically-advanced era Heifetz, Oistrakh, Milstein, Kogan etc...With the passing of Ivry Gitlis and Ida Haendel this year, the golden age of violin playing has finally come to an end.
