One more time for #EcstasyOfWhodini (#Whodini) A lot of y’all might not know the whole history but it should be noted that yes #RunDMC was breaking down CRAZY barriers for hip hop to thrive in the mainstream w #RockBox #KingOfRock & #WalkThisWay especially for MTV, pop radio & the mainstream gatekeepers of the day (SNL/Live Aid) but Whodini (@jalil.whodini @grandmasterdee) had even crazier barriers to break down. It’s just hitting me that black radio (and the black guard) was TWICE as resistant than their white counterparts. This @SoulTrain ep is a mighty fine example of how crucial Whodini was at the time. The rap that got on the show was pretty much about networking & favors (all the Sugarhill acts had an “in” via Sylvia & Joey Robinson)—-but rap was clearly a puzzlement for cats Don’s age. Especially in 85/86 & you wondering where Barry White at, you perplexed that Marvin Gaye been gone a whole year & your star pupil (6 timer Michael Jackson) was way too famous for the show now. So Don was PC at best w it. This Whodini ep was crucial because they figured out the formula on how to win over the naysayers (ironically w Larry Smith the same guy who gave Run & em rock guitars)—-Whodini truly integrated the system by crossing over to the black side. This was Essence Festival ready. Afternoon FM radio ready. Your parents can jam w this too ready. But not watered down. Don was so open he let them go down the Soul Train line. THAT gesture is saying something
