It is so important to me as a Filipino American to celebrate my culture and be open about it because when I was growing up, I didn’t have many people who looked like me to look up to in the industry. Especially in the ballroom world, I was definitely a rarity when it came to my heritage. Competing on Dancing with the Stars for the past 15 years has been one of my greatest joys, especially because I get to represent Asian American girls. I’d like to thank my mother, Sherri Burke for being such a great role model in my life, one who is proudly Pinay! My mother grew up in extreme poverty and did so in her hometown/province, Nuevo Ecija, but nothing stopped her from pursuing her dreams even though English was barely a second language to her. Thank you for your fight, your drive and your resilience to not let your past or upbringing stop you from building an amazing life! Thank you for taking me every year to go and visit our family in the Philippines and for insisting that I go with you to visit Lolo and my cousins in Nueva Ecija where it all started for you. Even though there were no toilets, let alone A/C (ha!), it was all so worth it! Thank you for teaching me how to be an independent woman who works hard, never gives up or relies on anyone for financial support. Most of all, thank you for supporting me and letting me follow my true passion in life, dance. It’s because of you I am here today being honored and inducted into the Asian Hall of Fame!
