Promising Young Woman stars Carey Mulligan as Cassie, an unexpected avenger who targets toxic men. It's a premise that writer and director Emerald Fennell—who wrote the film before the #MeToo movement erupted—said stemmed from her wondering what she might do if she were to reap revenge in real life. “I wanted to write a revenge movie that felt like it had a real woman at the center of it,” she tells V.F. "You probably wouldn’t necessarily go down the route of [using an] AK-47…so then, what do you do?"

The film juxtaposes its serious questions and scenarios—men preying on drunk women—with a pastel color palette and a pop soundtrack featuring Paris Hilton and Charlie XCX, not to mention a Britney Spears cover. That, Mulligan says, was intentional: “I think Cassie is somebody who’s hiding in plain sight. She’s somebody who knows that you don’t suspect a girl with multicolored nails.
