He was about to call 911 when Philadelphia police arrived on the scene and mistook him for the attacker.⁠ ⁠ They shot him in the back three times, then embarked on a cover up after realizing he was unarmed and didn't match the description of the attacker.⁠ ⁠ Termaine was was wrongly convicted of assaulting the woman he had tried to help. And, last week, after 19 years of wrongful incarceration, he was freed and exonerated.⁠ ⁠ "I am so proud of myself that I did not give up," he said after his release. “There were moments, but I did not give up. One of the bullets barely missed my spine, but you’re talking to a guy who ran a couple of marathons while he was incarcerated.”⁠ ⁠ Termaine also wrote a dozen plays and musicals while incarcerated. He hopes to produce and direct plays in the future.⁠ ⁠ For now, he is focused on spending time with his family and rebuilding his life.
