The spectacular pyrotechnics of Chinese artist Cai Guo-Qiang (@caistudio) have found a new expression in Sleepwalking in the Forbidden City, his first-ever virtual reality artwork.

Created in partnership with @htcvivearts and debuted last week at the Palace Museum in Beijing, the piece imagines a daytime fireworks display at the palace, like the ones that once marked the Lunar New Year. Rather than relying on 3D animation software, Cai commissioned the artwork’s components in real life and went about filming them: craftspeople from his hometown created an alabaster model of the Forbidden City, while a full-scale fireworks display was launched and filmed in 360 degrees.

‘I’m interested in grafting different mediums and diverse languages together, not minding the final results’ rawness and contradiction,’ the artist tells us.
