Scientists are planting fake turtle eggs in real turtle nests to track egg poaching and trafficking, according to the US-based conservation organization Paso Pacifico. Poachers destroy more than 90% of sea turtle nests on many of Central America's unprotected beaches to sell the eggs into the illegal wildlife trade, the organization estimates. The devices, which use GPS technology, could help crack the illegal wildlife trade across a number of vulnerable species, according to Helen Pheasey, a Ph.D. student in the UK, who uses the device in her studies.
