His mother murdered at a German concentration camp, his father shot in the head in front of him at their boarding house by the KGB. 2 hours from London by plane, Belarus still has KGB officers and a dictator who just rigged yet another election. The KGB/his regime are jailing people, en masse, beating and torturing them for meeting in a courtyard to discuss how to peacefully protest. They are jailing doctors for speaking up against Lukashenko’s dismissal of COVID-19 as “covid psychosis” (sounds familiar). As westerners we have no clue what a dictatorship is really like. The stories that Milos told me, how he and Vaclav Havel (who would rise from a playwright and poet to lead a revolution overthrow the communist regime and become the president. I danced on his desk once, he was, like Milos, an astonishing man.) As young men in Prague, they would regularly be thrown into the gulag, were declared “insane“ and “dissidents,” due to sneaking off to see an Ella Fitzgerald show, writing plays, poetry, making music, staging theatre productions in garages and abandoned buildings, hanging around with actors and dancers, all of this forbidden 🚫 under that oppressive, evil regime. In other words, culture, the arts, the dangerous thinkers and poets and doers, these 🎭 were forbidden. And illegal. Hearing these “old timey” stories I was horrified, but didn’t think any of it was current. I was wrong. It is what is happening in Belarus now. This election was stolen by the last dictator in Europe. Let’s show the Belarus Free Theatre 🇧🇾 and women (men and children) of Belarus our support. Could never happen to us in the west? In the UK? Don’t be so sure.
