Photo by @katieorlinsky / Rancher and former Catron County commissioner Hugh B. McKeen and his calf “Red” in Alma, New Mexico, located on the edge of the Gila National Forest and Wilderness. Numerous cattle ranches surround the Gila National Forest, and many maintain grazing allotments within the forest itself. McKeen told me that Red was orphaned after a wolf attacked her mother. The Mexican gray wolf, native to the region, almost went extinct until a re-introduction program began in 1992. Cattle owners are compensated for any verified wolf attack on their livestock, but the program is still extremely unpopular with local ranchers.
