Like many of us, shift supervisor Miguel spent the early days of the pandemic sitting at home while his store was temporarily closed.
Then one day, he received an email asking veterans to volunteer at a makeshift field hospital in New York City. As a former Army medic, Miguel jumped at the chance.
“It was pretty early on, and no one really knew what was happening,” Miguel says. “I just saw people suffering, and I wanted to help.”
For three weeks, Miguel treated and comforted COVID-19 patients while also acting as a translator for Spanish-speaking patients. It was a difficult and challenging time, full of both tragedies and victories.
“I saw it firsthand, that lesson of living in the present. We get tied up with so many different things in life, we forget that the most important thing and the greatest thing is what we’re living for in this very moment.”
Thank you, Miguel, and all front-line responders for going above and beyond this year. 💚
