This holiday season, I challenge you to dedicate 15% of your holiday gift-giving towards Black-Owned Businesses and tag three friends to do the same. I’ve been so inspired (and educated!) by @AuroraJames and her non-profit, @15PercentPledge that it has motivated me to make a change in my own spending habits this holiday season. To give a little refresher, the #15percentpledge urges major retailers to commit 15% of their shelf space to Black-owned businesses - currently, they only dedicate 2%. 🤦🏻‍♀️ Well, what can we do, you say!? The holidays are around the corner and I’ve been taking inventory in what I fill my friend’s and family’s stockings with, and specifically, where I put my spending power during this gift-giving season. In recognizing where I direct my dollars, it became clear that I haven’t made a concerted effort in past years to support Black brands and I’m making myself accountable for it this year and moving forward. My hope is that you will join me. In the coming weeks, I’ll be highlighting a multitude of Black-owned businesses as well as challenging you to dedicate 15% of your holiday gift-giving towards Black-Owned Businesses as well. I’m so excited to share these incredible businesses with you and please share your favorites with me. My hope is that in addition to supporting these brands people will be motivated to continue to #BuyBlack and keep the information and resources flowing in the the direction they deserve, beyond the holiday season.
