The life of Amazing Grace has always been a quietly epic tale, fraught with a little peril at the start before she safely lands in the care of my Grandparents. Raised in Newark, my Mom left the security of her Mom and Dad’s at age 18 for marriage to my Father. Over the next 7 years, Mrs. Smith would have 3 kids and build a life in Highlands, a beach town on the Jersey shore. There, she would care for her little family as well as her Mom, who lived around the block. And so for the 23 years I lived with my parents, I had a front row seat for the adventure of her lifetime, as I got to watch Mom navigate marriage, motherhood, elder care, the church, the schools, and finances. We were lower, lower, lower middle class and yet Mom could always stretch my Dad’s @uspostalservice salary to the point where we’d travel around the U.S. for Easter vacations. And when I told my Mom I needed money to rent the camera I needed to make Clerks, she gave me the $3k that was my parents’ life savings so I could pretend to be a filmmaker. My Mom is my hero, Kids - always has been, always will be. She taught me to be me - so if you like who I am, thank Grace. Covid is keeping me from her on her 75th (I was supposed to be with my Mom in Florida today but it was deemed too risky; instead I’ll see Mom after Christmas), so can you do me a favor?
