For the final round of V.F.'s extraordinary historymakers of 2020, we'd be remiss not to highlight Bong Joon-Ho and his, well, history-making Oscar wins. South Korea’s film industry has been producing robust, international hits for decades—but it took Parasite for the Academy Awards to finally open their eyes. Parasite not only became the first film not in the English language to win best picture, but also the first South Korean film even nominated for best international feature film (it won that too).

Later in the year, This American Life, along with reporters Emily Green and Molly O’Toole, won the first Pulitzer Prize for audio reporting, for “revelatory, intimate journalism that illuminates the personal impact of the Trump administration’s ‘Remain in Mexico’ policy.” Meanwhile, after being halted by the coronavirus pandemic, the NBA season found undeniable success with its COVID-safe “bubble,” all thanks to Commissioner of the NBA Adam Silver. After 172 games there were zero positive tests—the only major professional sport to pull off that feat.

And finally, during the same election that led its former senator Joe Biden to the White House, Delaware welcomed to its state senate Sarah McBride, who joins a small but growing group of trans elected officials nationwide. “I am hopeful that tonight’s result can send a potentially lifesaving message to a young trans kid,” McBride told BuzzFeed. “They can go to sleep knowing that their dreams and their truths are not mutually exclusive.” Tap the link in bio for the rest of V.F.'s extraordinary historymakers.
