“Ultimately happiness is really just about enjoying life,”
Tony Hsieh - 1973-2020. R.I.P. (@Tony Hsieh )
Tony Hsieh is one of the people I admire and who really finessed the art of living life while maximizing your impact on making the world a better place.
It’s disappointing to see the Tech media; talking negatively about him taking drugs and getting drunk while partying but they fail to see the tremendous value he created for the world.
Tony sold the first company he founded, an internet advertising service called LinkExchange, to Microsoft for about $265 million when he was in his mid-20s.
The next year he invested in what became Zappos. Amazon bought Zappos in 2009 for more than $1 billion.
@ジェフ・ベゾス credits the success of Amazon to its culture and Tony played a big part in helping make Amazon become the most valuable company in the world.
Tony wrote in his book “Delivering Happiness” that shots of vodka were a company tradition. He told Playboy magazine in 2014 he wrote the book in part fueled by coffee beans soaked in vodka.
At Zappos, Tony didn’t believe in company hierarchy, assigning some employees titles like “fungineer.”
When Mark Guadagnoli, currently a professor of neuroscience at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, took a break from his academic career to work for a couple of years at Zappos, Tony gave him the title of “zookeeper.” He was charged with creating Zappos University, the company’s culture training center. (PS: I need a zookeeper 😊 )
He wrote that the Zappos culture was all about the pursuit of fun. “When you need to party, you party. When you need to produce, you produce,” he wrote.
