The UK is hosting climate change (COP) talks in 2021 which will set the narrative and framing for the agenda. The UK COP leadership team is male dominated which is not only irresponsible from a diplomatic perspective, but also fundamentally damaging in terms of our ability to make this COP the success it needs to be. This is why I am so proud to support @sheclimate’s open letter calling for a more diverse #COP26 leadership team. We are publicly calling on Alok Sharma, President of COP26, who is leading the team hosting COP26 to address the gender divisions in climate by forming a representative and inclusive leadership team. We need a 50:50 balance of women at the top of this and all future COPs. Meaning 50% of direct reports to the CEO and President should be women: Directors, Lead Negotiators, Champions, Ambassadors. Equal representation of women is vital for the leadership team and for the planet. Why? Women are change agents, meaning that if a change is needed they will often be instrumental in identifying what needs to be done and then making it happen. Climate change is a huge and existential threat, but women play a fundamental role in our fight against it. Any problems we face as a result will be easier to solve if women are included in the solving of them. At this point in history where we cannot afford to put a foot wrong, we must have diverse leadership to ensure our leaders have a full understanding of what is going on and how we can navigate the huge issues we face. The future that we can build together has every potential to be better than anything we’ve previously known.
