Even the prosecuting attorney says she now thinks he should live. Yet the 40-year-old is scheduled to be put to death by legal injection in just 3 days. ⁣ ⁣ Brandon was 18 when he was convicted over the 1999 kidnapping and murder of a white couple in TX. Brandon was one of two Black teens sentenced to death, but he was not even present when the couple was abducted. Christopher Vialva, the other teen who was present and allegedly pulled the trigger, was executed on September 22nd. Christopher was the first Black inmate put to death after the Trump administration resumed the death penalty earlier this year. ⁣ ⁣ Gary McClung, a juror, felt massive guilt about Bernard’s sentence. He never understood why the two had been tried as a pair when Bernard was afraid and confused. Bernard says he learned from the experience and became a mentor to at-risk youth.⁣ ⁣ From the @theintercept: “I have never been able to hug my dad, but mentally and emotionally he is there for me as much as possible,” said Brandon’s daughter Taneah. “It might not seem like much of a relationship, but it is the best one I have and it is important to me.” ⁣ “It was especially great to see my daughter because I don’t ever get to see her,” Bernard wrote. “And seeing how she has grown…I couldn’t stop looking at her.”⁣ ⁣ Brandon deserves to live.
