The attitude of being grateful, a feeling to which philosophers such as Seneca and Cicero attributed thaumaturgical powers, is learned through practice. The psychologist Martin Seligman, founding father of "positive psychology", suggests two targeted exercises, both simple and inexpensive (paper and pen are all you need). The first, known as the "gratitude journal", consists of drawing up a list of reasons why we should be grateful to life every night before going to bed, starting with the good things that happened during the day. The second, writing a thank you letter to someone who has been generous to us (without any obligation to send it). Over the last ten years, there has been a proliferation of studies that demonstrate the effectiveness of this "gymnastics of gratitude" on psychophysical well-being: it lowers inflammatory indicators in the blood; it promotes self-control and self-esteem; it fights anxiety and compulsive shopping; and, by helping us tame our ego, it even makes us more able to establish longer-lasting relationships.
