One of my favorite behaviors I like seeing in dogs is “*self-handicapping”. I learned this from Dr. McConnell when I started fostering Border Collies. (*The term is used differently when applied in human behaviors.)

When two dogs play, you might observe a bigger or stronger dog purposely acting less threatening/intimidating by lowering herself or reducing her strength towards the smaller/weaker one. You want to encourage these behaviors instead of “bullying” ones. The first week after PB came to us, I noticed that BB was wanting to be pushy and too rough with PB. PB was timid and tiny and I could see BB bullying her around if I allowed it. So I micro-managed all their interactions in the beginning and we did more parallel plays—them playing next to each other with ME. I was there to protect PB if necessary. Once PB was comfortable in her new home and her new family members, she was confident enough to engage in play with BB. Instead of trying to push PB around, BB played much more respectfully and kindly.
If you just added a new dog to your family, take your time to introduce her/him to your resident dog. Don’t let them “sort it out” on their own, but help them to have more positive and controlled interactions.
