My hat's off to Ueda’s courage to constantly burst his way into the frontier. I’m writing this post because I had some thoughts on an incident surrounding Ueda’s production. Ahead of the exhibition, Ueda has rebuilt his kiln. His kiln is located in the middle of a small marshland on the hillside of a mountain his family owns, with no fence or anything marking or guarding it. The land used to be a rice paddy, which he filled to build his kiln on top. He didn’t fill the land enough for his old kiln, however, and water seeped up from the ground, filling the extremely hot kiln with steam; it exploded once, hurtling a three-millimeter-thick iron plate into Ueda's chest and breaking a few ribs. He was lucky to have survived the incident. Ueda firmly believed, however, that his old kiln held the key to achieving the ideal effect he wanted with the glazes and the outcome for his vessels, and continued using it for some time. Early this year, he finally decided to rebuild the kiln, primarily because of its terrible fuel efficiency. He drew up his own plan, bought bricks with what little budget he had, and completed the new kiln. But it turned out smaller than he had calculated, with quite a few leftover bricks unaccounted for. He also realized that one of the drawings he had made for the kiln was missing from the file. Did someone make away with it? Ueda, however, has been diagnosed with a developmental disability and has been confirmed to have difficulties with linguistic communications and numerical understanding, so it could be all in his head.
