It’s a project that in essence seemed so simple, yet has proved to be incredibly challenging to execute and ultimately, get to release stage. The ocean has always been my biggest mirror to how I’m feeling mentally and the process of shooting Skin Deep was incredibly empowering and cathartic. By embracing my femininity in a place free of judgement it’s allowed me to view my body in such a different way. To honour it for what it allows me to do physically and to embrace self love and acceptance. Surfing and art are my two biggest passions. They share themes of self-expression, self-discovery and freedom. It’s when I am doing either that I feel most alive, inspired and simultaneously calm and exhilarated. They both serve to inspire each other. My experience in the ocean inspires the form and mediums and lines in my art. And now, particularly with this Skin Deep project, art has guided and influenced every aspect of the production. The finished four-minute clip is everything I would have ever hoped it could be. I’m proud to have worked with a very small, yet incredibly talented group of professionals who for many years, I have also considered close friends. Its intentions are represented and conveyed successfully via the title, the written word, the visuals, the lyrics … a few others (very few), have felt challenged, lost and confused by what it is they have watched. These people have asked, “Why?” And my answer, the answer that sits in my core, as an artist and surfer, to those people each time is; “Why not?” I hope you like it.
