Stephen Colbert posed for Annie Leibovitz just three days after Election Day, as Joe Biden's lead grew clearer but was still far from certain. "It was hard to concentrate—but we pushed through," says @AnnieLeibovitz. "He wanted to project a feeling of hope and peace and light—these pictures are really expressing a state of mind."
For his V.F. cover story, Colbert addresses that hope head-on when it comes to envisioning what the Late Show will look like a year from now, when there might be a vaccine: “The first thing I picture is I have an audience,” he says. "and our offices are buzzing every day and we’re all passing each other in the halls and saying, ‘Did you see this story?’ and ‘How was your weekend?’ And we’re laughing and we’re hugging and we’re friends hanging out, which is what we are."
