No computers were used at any point in the making of these machines or images. Instead, artist James Gandy (@gandyworks) hand-builds harmonographs, wooden and metal devices that employ pendulums to create patterns and geometric images.
“The drawings are a demonstration of the proper function of the mechanical process. I enjoy the drawings, but the real fun is making the machine and experimenting with various mechanisms,” he says.
“One of the signature elements that makes up the designs is a continuous line either making ellipses or arcing lines in close series creating forms, sometimes cyclic and geometric and sometimes more amorphous and organic.
The time-lapse videos are satisfying because you see often unlikely forms take shape very quickly. The drawings are quite slow to finish in real time. I think these forms and shapes are universally appealing because of the natural laws of physics that determine the designs.”
