I do take my job seriously, though, and I would be remiss if I didn’t answer a question that I’ve been asked frequently, by my human friends. No, please don’t purchase a large bird like me. For sure, there are loving and responsible bird owners out there, and I thank them immensely, but I think they would probably agree, that this role is not for everyone. Ideally, most should be living in the wild, but obviously that is not always possible, considering the large bird trade and habitat loss. Even truly well intentioned folks don’t usually realize what they are getting into with exotic animals, and many (including Moluccans) often end up being given away, or severely neglected. While clearly adorable, we can be oh so loud (not me, I’m perfect according to my parents) messy, and require massive amounts of time and energy that people generally don’t have. We are highly intelligent, sensitive, magnificent beings, and also inherently wild. I lucked out and was rescued, but that is not always the case. With all this said, if you do have the time, space, resources and love to give, please consider rescuing, fostering, or adopting an animal in need that fits your home, family, and lifestyle. Whether it’s a bird or another beautiful creature, there will generally be a rescue org, with those respective animals looking for good homes. If that’s not possible, you can virtually sponsor. Really, even just simple awareness can help in major ways, so props to you for taking the time to read this.
