I’ve been loving the try-hard on this trip, mostly onsighting. The highlight so far was a route called Donkey Kong extension at Nifada. I scraped my way through Donkey Kong Junior and since our guide calls the extension 8b/+ I thought I had no chance on the onsight, but I like trying hard so I pushed on into the extension. I climbed with a good head space, just letting my body try hard and go with the moves on the fly. I clipped the chains almost too exhausted to be psyched. Turns out 8a+ is a better grade for the route but what made this experience memorable was trying really hard! I’m glad I don’t take grades too seriously or otherwise I never would have given it a serious effort 😂 For me, trying hard is half the pleasure in climbing and it’s also an extremely useful skill. Really giving a move everything with no concern of failure has got me up a lot of routes. I wrote a blog recently on ‘trying hard’ give it a read if you’re interested.
