Notice how he uses his mouth (capable of crushing a femur 🦴 with ease), as you would your hand and gently moves my hand away as part of the game of ‘grab the hind leg.’ To say these animals are smart is an understatement. In fact in some cognitive studies, hyena outperformed chimpanzees in collaborative problem solving. 😳😳 With female dominated hierarchies as complex as that of primates, hyena are hardly the skulking, foolish scavengers they’re made out to be in some films. They’re highly adaptable and this is why when we see them disappear from ecosystems we should be seriously worried. I’ve known Luke for over a decade and his clan of 7, for around 2 decades, so these relationships are not just a flash in the pan. It’s unfortunate I even have to write that but apparently common sense isn’t so common anymore. I hope this short video makes you fall even more in love with hyena, so that the next time you see them in the wild you stop and revere them as you would a sighting of a lion or leopard. I know I do.
