Because the magnification is so great, it’s invaluable for discovering interesting subjects. When I’m in search of something to photograph, I place it around my neck and go hunting—in the kitchen, when I’m looking for abstract subjects; in the studio, when I’m looking for the most interesting part of a feather or butterfly wing; or in the garden, when I’m looking for shape, texture, and color. I found this tiny flower (about the size of a fingernail) using the loupe in a patch of ordinary plants.The first flash is about 20 feet away to create some specular backlight for the purple petals. The second flash has a 5-degree grid on the front and is aimed to bounce off of a white card that’s inches below the flower.
