"The most notorious emblem of the Cold War was the Berlin Wall. Although it was made of concrete, it was a physical manifestation of what became known as the Iron Curtain. The Wall became a fixture of the landscape and seemed as if it would stand forever," writes photographer James Nachtwey. "There are very few single events when it's possible to see history change in front of our eyes," he continues. In November 1989, "the opening of the Berlin Wall was one of them." In these photographs from his archive: an East Berliner gripped the top of the Wall to pull himself over to the West, and East Germans gathered at a mass rally in front of the secret police headquarters in East Berlin.
