Lessons in athletic maturity.

Now that my 20-21 year old days of “hmm let’s max out some random thing for fun with no consequences” are getting further and further behind me, learning to essentially not be a young dumb ass about training is getting more and more important. Learning MY signs of when to push and when to listen is something I’ve never been great at, but I think spending a ton of hours completely alone in a gym this year has taught me a lot.

Usually the week before a back off (especially if we push for LONGER than normal) I have to listen HARD. My normal aches and pains don’t lessen with warming up, new ones show their face, normal signs of “tired” (slower/fatigued) turn into timing being way off, feet moving at snails pace, etc. My focus gets pulled way easier (ie setting up for a lift and I catch myself thinking about like laundry or something) & I have to say, okay: do I push or do I just take what I can get today? Sometimes, I probably make the wrong decision & pushing leads to misses & emotions. Other times, stopping just shy of that days max effort is the absolute best decision.

This day, on “shitty double” number I have no idea, was a call it and don’t get greedy day. Could I have made up this last set (no one likes ending on a miss)?? Absolutely. Was it necessary? Not this week.

LEARN YOUR BODY. Learn when to pull it together and suck it up and when to put your ego aside and make the educated athlete decision to pull back a little. More is not always better!
