Though not actively ablaze, it too represents an unabashed nod to the events of the day. As a friend asked when given a preview, “Is the whole world on fire in all the paintings of this show?” While I wish to dose the masses with faith in humankind, I feel called to first depict the world as it is; one in which our ways aren’t working. One that is beautiful even as it burns, unsound even as it stuns. Violent in its opposing and yet convergent reverberations—the world comes together as it falls apart. For most of us (all of us?) inner life is racing through events we’ve usually had years to prepare for or recover from. Outer life is moving at a new speed and its uncanny, alien percussion is waking us right out of old rhythms. We’re realizing we don’t know our people. Our people don’t know us. We haven’t known ourselves, and if we did, we’re losing those identities. Identities that were always only good enough. We’re losing our futures. Futures that were never meaningfully imagined. And yet somehow we thought it was all promised. It can burn through, If we’ll allow it. It can be beautiful, if we only look and see. Life and love are still the best two choices; the best shared future. The rest, it seems, is a game for the fate of all things. 🎾」11月5日 3時24分
