ON THIS DAY: A commuter on the London Underground reads a copy of D H Lawrence's “Lady Chatterley's Lover”, unaware of the fellow passengers surreptitiously reading over his shoulder, 3rd November 1960. The previous day, the verdict had been given in the trial of the novel's publisher, Penguin Books, under the Obscene Publications Act 1959. The novel was found not to be obscene and the full unexpurgated edition was made available in Britain for the first time.
