🎃 Happy Halloween from the BOO-ggenheim! 🕸
⠀
The six figures in George Segal’s “The Costume Party” (pictured) appear in an array of primary colors. The subject matter springs from personal experience—Segal had attended “a Halloween party and decided that the theme had possibilities.” The scene collects figures from literary and popular culture into one moment—Antony (cast from art dealer Richard Bellamy) and Cleopatra reclining on the floor next to a seated Catwoman and presided over by the fool Bottom from Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” Superman, and the James Bond villain Fiona Volpe.
⠀
Reworked over a period of seven years, “The Costume Party” has been exhibited in different configurations and color schemes; with each change Segal felt the grouping took on a nightmarish, hallucinatory mood, which for the artist became, through the making of this piece, increasingly connected to color.
