Meet 17-year-old Volodymyr Charushyn, from Ukraine, an athlete and amateur chef.
Volodymyr lost his hearing ability due to an early childhood trauma. He felt isolated, unable to communicate freely with children and adults outside of his specialized educational institution.
So together with his friends, he developed a unique technology that teaches children how to use a dactyl [manual] alphabet to talk to non-hearing people.
“My friends and I have long dreamed of breaking this barrier, this wall of misunderstanding and alienation between the society and the people who cannot hear,” he says.
Their invention, a set of wooden cubes where each letter is represented by a hand gesture and objects that have the letter in their name, was installed in his hometown’s public spaces. ⠀
