You never got to choose. I am your first grandchild but because you passed before I was born we never met. Although I lost so much when we lost you, I feel I know you. You were born Florence Elizabeth Johnson on this day in 1910 in the rural mountains of NC. The eldest of 5, you were a born leader with a strong Christian faith & a spirit to serve. In your youth, you were dedicated to getting an college education & intended to become a missionary in Africa, but a meeting with the dazzling & equally faithful Ray Lawrence at church during the Depression steered your life in a different direction. The two of you used your energy, training & love in the service of your community of Boone- you as a teacher & he as an optometrist. Your gifts of public speaking, awards for dramatics & support of theatre were passed to your own children, my Dad & Aunt. That was the gene pool I was bathing in when you passed so suddenly during an routine surgery in Nov 1960. It was inevitable that your death shattered the family & the town. It was said that “a pall has fallen over Boone”. However, the love around that lineage kept the blessed ties bound & I was raised to respect who you were in the broad strokes. But I find treasures like this, in family photos taken before your 50th & final year, that let me visit with you & offer clues to draw you closer. Your perch on that ottoman that I came to know so well, your natural affinity for dogs, that you like that same of shade of yellow that I do, and that my elbow is beginning to look just like yours! We are both drawn to travel & different cultures. You never made it to Africa but I was able to. You visited Cuba & I still need to make that trip. Your commitment to service & lifting up others who need support lives in me. I am older than you had the privilege of being & grateful for every year. So today, in your memory, I carry on as Board VP & donate to @healthebay ‘s programs educating kids to take care of our rivers & ocean. Happy 110th birthday 🎂 Because of you, I am🥰」10月28日 10時06分
