A small collection of leaves, all photographed within a 30 foot radius in South Bend, #Indiana. Each one of these was still hanging from its respective tree or shrub, backlit in the evening light giving it a more 3 dimensional quality. If you’ve ever wondered why plants change color in the #autumn, here’s my best understanding: As the days get shorter in Fall, leaves stop producing “chlorophyll”, a pigment triggered by sunlight that helps the leaf absorb energy through photosynthesis. Once chlorophyll production ceases, due to lack of sunlight, the green color fades out and the pigment “xanthophyll” begins to show, which is typically in the yellow, orange and red spectrum. These colors are a clear signal that the flora is moving into winter hibernation. 🍂
