#tbt 20 short years ago to HOT L BALTIMORE at @wtfestival with @mesiegfried.

With theaters remaining closed all over the country it is incumbent on us to remember that the financial impact on EVERYONE that works in and around theaters is absolutely brutal.

The cultural impacts are incalculable, the economic impact in NYC alone rates around $12 Billion of lost revenue.

As if that weren’t bad enough SAG-AFTRA, in a move that flies in the face of decency and worker’s solidarity, have decided to undercut negotiated deals that Actors Equity had in place with Equity houses.

From Equity: “Since the pandemic began, members reported to Equity that SAG-AFTRA began signing agreements with Equity employers that undercut the Equity terms and conditions. The union has tracked some 60 productions signed with SAG-AFTRA, with some members reporting they are put on “deferred compensation” agreements that undercut Equity wages. Productions that should have been Equity contracts amounted to an estimated $600,000 in lost earnings and $154,000 in lost contributions to the Equity-League health fund.

In some cases, Equity stage mangers have been excluded entirely, had their contracts revoked or been offered work as independent contractors without workers’ compensation protections.”.

Additionally, SAG-AFTRA have launched a ludicrous social media campaign (unclear how much, if any, union monies are being used) to attempt to strong-arm their sister union into accepting poorer deals and worse protections for fellow arts workers.

The resounding silence in the face of this from the “Vote Yes” crowd of the past year, who were so adamant about their desire to ‘get folks back to work with a good deal’, is nothing short of craven hypocrisy.
