At the very first TED conference in 1984, legendary mathematician Benoit Mandelbrot introduced his theory of fractals, or never-ending geometric patterns. In a fractal — shown here in this head of Romanesque cauliflower — you'll see the same pattern repeated, no matter how much you zoom in. The late Mandelbrot said this mathematical phenomenon can be used to explain the extreme complexity and natural “roughness” of our world. Watch his 2010 TED Talk to learn how we can find order in patterns that seem impossibly complicated at first glance, from CGI-made mountains in movies to a map of the human lung.
