I ended up with a 36 minute “short” film. . Everyone told me it was too long. That no film festival would accept a short longer than 20 minutes. . I didn’t know what to do. Listen to the (unanimous) opinions of everyone around me? Or stick with the 36 minute version I’d worked so hard on. . We looked at the upcoming film festival deadlines and realized our timing was perfect to send the film to Sundance. . I sent the 36 minute version. . Over 14,000 short films are submitted to Sundance each year. I figured it was such a long shot and I could always cut it down later if it wasn’t accepted anywhere. . But we got into Sundance. . I remember dancing around my kitchen after getting that phone call - not quite able to believe it was true. . So with zero film festival experience we headed off to the craziness of Park City in January. . Seeing the film with an audience was amazing. . Watching them squirm in their seats. . Speaking with them after the screenings. I was amazed at how many different types of people responded to the film. It wasn’t just the micro niche audience I’d imagined. It was middle aged women. Straight guys in their 20s. People I’d never imagined being drawn into my story of a gay high school crush hone horribly wrong. There seemed to be something strangely universal about it. .
