The Great Wall of China was a series of walls and fortifications, totaling more than 13,000 miles in length, located in northern China. Perhaps the most recognizable symbol of China, the Great Wall was originally conceived as a means of preventing incursions from nomadic tribes. The best-known and best-preserved sections of the Great Wall were built in the 14th through 17th centuries during the Ming dynasty. Though the Great Wall never effectively prevented invaders from entering China - some invaders merely made end runs -- the paths along the top of the wall aided the movement of Chinese soldiers and equipment. Even so, China’s iconic military monument was an imperfect defense in its long struggle against the irrepressible nomads from the north. It did, however, function as a powerful monument to the Chinese civilization’s enduring strength and a symbol, both physical – as a manifestation of Chinese might -- as well as psychological -- representing the Chinese government's ability to repel foreign influences and exert control over its citizens. The wall stands as the world's largest military structure and has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage site. But no, it can’t be seen from outer space. #greatwallofchina #greatwall #mingdynasty #worldheritagesite
