The flapjack octopus, Opisthoteuthis sp., is a cirrate octopus, a group named for the hair-like structures called 'cirri' on their arms. Scientists believe this octopus uses the cirri that line the underside of each arm to catch food. The cirri beat to create a current that traps small food under the webbing between the arms. They prey on small crustaceans, including copepods, mysids, amphipods, isopods, and polychaete worms. Although sightings of this species are rare, they are typically found at depths between 120 and 820 meters (393 and 2,690 feet) deep.
