In 1954, design and technology made the Mercedes-Benz 300 SL the absolute dream sports car from 134 years of automotive history. The names given to the car, which was also successful in motor sports, were almost poetic: "Gullwing" or "Papillon" (butterfly). However, the doors are not an aesthetic end in themselves, but rather technically necessary. The tubular lattice frame is so high at the sides that conventional door constructions cannot be realized.
