Photo by @nataliekeyssar "I returned to the US from abroad in mid March, anxious to get back to New York to be close to my family as the world suddenly became cloaked in uncertainty. A few days later, it began to dawn on me that I had also flown into the epicenter of the crisis. I can’t really describe the fear and profound sadness of documenting my unstoppable city grind to a halt as we lost thousands of our neighbors, but working through the peak gave me a sense of purpose and allowed me to learn from the doctors, nurses, and essential workers who were and are true heroes for all of us. I photographed retired nurse Laura Benson. She had stepped up to volunteer as a nurse at a daycare for healthcare workers so they could go to work and battle the virus. Photographing is tough when we can’t get close, so I’ve relied a lot on shooting through windows to create a sense of intimacy and capture these somber times without putting myself or others at risk. Laura had that calm, no-nonsense, reassuring presence that so many great nurses do, and her strength and determination really inspired me. Thank you Laura, and thank you to all our essential workers!"
