A few days later, it began to dawn on me that I had also flown into the epicenter of the crisis. I can’t really describe the fear and profound sadness of documenting my unstoppable city grind to a halt as we lost thousands of our neighbors, but working through the peak gave me a sense of purpose and allowed me to learn from the doctors, nurses, and essential workers who were and are true heroes for all of us. I photographed retired nurse Laura Benson. She had stepped up to volunteer as a nurse at a daycare for healthcare workers so they could go to work and battle the virus. Photographing is tough when we can’t get close, so I’ve relied a lot on shooting through windows to create a sense of intimacy and capture these somber times without putting myself or others at risk. Laura had that calm, no-nonsense, reassuring presence that so many great nurses do, and her strength and determination really inspired me.
