ISSUE 68, MOTUS

Nobel laureate Prof. Daniel Kahneman – Professor Emeritus of Psychology and Public Affairs at Princeton University – is a towering figure in psychology, and cognitive psychology in particular. Over the years, Prof. Kahneman has reserved extensive attention to research on the complex definition of well-being and happiness, distinguishing two very different notions of selves: an experiencing self, and a remembering, evaluating self. However, it’s his seminal study on behavior that has laid the foundation for a new field of research, integrating economic analysis with fundamental insights from cognitive psychology. Prof. Kahneman proved how the human mind is not governed by an unrealistic concept of rationality in decision-making, which was a common assumption amongst economists for centuries. For these discoveries, Prof. Kahneman was awarded the Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences in 2002. These researches begun in the early 70s and were conducted together with an esteemed colleague, the late Amos Tversky, who regrettably passed away suddenly in 1996. Over the years, Kahneman and Tversky proved through a series of extensive experiments how people are incapable of fully analyzing complex decisions in situations when the future consequences are uncertain. The human mind relies on heuristic shortcuts, intuitions that inevitably lead to error. But more importantly, this research has proved how individuals are very sensitive to the way in which an outcome deviates from a reference level more than to the absolute outcome. And how our memory plays a very important role. As the research developed over the years, it shed light on the processes of the human mind when making decisions, understanding “the marvels as well as the flaws of intuitive thought”.
