I hope you were all able to join me in stories today, and that you enjoyed learning a little more about Tā Tatau. I hope you were able to gain a deeper understanding of this indigenous practice and it’s significance for the Sāmoan and Pacific Islander cultures. • • As discussed today, while traditional Tā Tatau has survived and remained mostly unchanged by colonialism and industrialization, much of the artwork itself has moved into the modern world, jumping off the skin and bleeding into contemporary art as a way to represent the cultures of the South Pacific. One example is a mural that I painted, pictured here, for @piwellnessinitiative in their office entryway in Hayward, California. @piwellnessinitiative is a wonderful organization that provides mental health services and counseling for Pacific Islanders in Alameda County. My intention with this piece was to include motifs from many Pacific Islands, as a mixed Pasifika installation, so that all who enter the space will feel welcome and represented. Speaking of representation, tomorrow I’ll be chatting live with Grace at 1pm PST (4pm EST) about how lack of representation, misinformation and appropriation in the US has impacted Pacific Islander communities. See you then! 🌺」10月7日 7時12分 - designsponge
