On a recent trip to the Kruger Park, I wanted to photograph a leopard on top of an anthill. On this particular occasion we came across a coalition of 3 male lions. They all seemed to be social distancing from each other so it was difficult to decide who to stay watching. We made our choice and waited. Not long after, this chap gets up and walks up to and onto an anthill and looks straight at me. I laughed out loud! Wasn’t a leopard but I’ll gladly take it. Panthera leo will do. I then noticed something odd about this boy. He looked more weather beaten than the other two. Upon closer inspection he was thin and seemed to be losing his mane, most likely due to stress. Then I noticed his mouth. I couldn’t see any of his teeth and it looked incredibly swollen. He was also salivating a lot. When I looked at the photos on my computer later on, it looked as though this guy may have taken a blow to the mouth from a zebra or a giraffe and could even be missing his all important canines. I’m not sure what his fate will be as there is a non interference policy at the park for those wanting to know why the vet wasn’t called. It’s really tough out there in the wild and each day lived is one fraught with hardships whether you’re a predator or prey. Sometimes I think humans tend to over glamorize what it means to live in the wild because we have this romantic notion that it’s wonderful and everyone lives in harmony. We’ve lost touch with our ancestry. Each day is a struggle for survival.
