⁉️What do you think of the mysterious autumn fruit of Japan: AKEBI?✨

This rare Japanese fruit only grows for about two to three weeks out of the entire year and is typically only available in northern or mountainous regions. ⛰ The peel ranges from bright purple to brown and can resemble a potato. 🥔 The inside may resemble a caterpillar to some 🐛 , but the taste is creamy and somewhere between a banana, a coconut and a lychee. 🥥🍌The seeds are also edible but they are extremely bitter if you chew them, so be careful not to bite down on the seeds! 🙅🏼‍♀️ It’s best to spit them out or just as easy to swallow them like you would with passion fruit seeds. 😋

Many older Japanese people have fond childhood memories of searching for Akebi with their friends when they would play in the forests or the mountains. 😍 Although some people might cut an Akebi open with a knife 🔪 🥺, you can easily tear open the peel and remove the fruit by hand. ✌️😁 When they are at their ripest, they will actually form a small opening making it even easier to open by hand to enjoy! ✨

Akebi is native to Japan, China and Korea, and is invasive in some other parts of the world thanks to plant smugglers who transported the fruit from Asia in the 1800s and gave it the English name “Chocolate Vine”. 🧐 Although you may manage to hunt down an Akebi near you, they can be very expensive 💸 and difficult to come by in most parts of the world. 🌏 In Fukushima, Akebi are inexpensive and easy to come by from late September and throughout most of October!!🍂 Akebi have become one of my favorite fruits so I was happy to pick up a big bag from the farmers’ market just 15 minutes from Fukushima station! 😍 Come to Fukushima for Autumn and try an Akebi! 😋

‼️Let me know in the comments, would YOU try this rare fruit? ✨🧐
