It ended when I read the book I had written to her, and she pretended to blissfully fall asleep. It felt like she was using this play to reassure herself that the work that takes me away from her is in some way an act of love that will nourish her in the end. She was compelled to play out this scenario after I told her I was going away, just for the day, to plant trees. My advocacy for reorienting our relationship to our environment often feels futile and fruitless under the crippling extractive systems at play, and because it takes me away from her (who I am ultimately trying to save with the action). However, while I was at the planting I overheard a rep from @riverkeeper (the org overseeing the restoration) that they were able to plant a lot more trees because they had greater turn out due to the promotional assistance from @onetreeplanted I lit up as I was laboring, because I had made that introduction between the two organizations prior to the pandemic. It seemed like a small thing at the time, but I had no idea its effects would be so impactful. It was a reminder that we often don’t see the outcomes of every little action we take as we work toward an ethical life inside this unethical system.
