#RickOwens’ spring 2021 show reached mythological proportions in more ways than one. He titled the collection Phlegethon after one of the five rivers of the Underworld in Greek mythology (and the river of blood in Dante’s ‘Divine Comedy’). And his lineup of tops and capes with line-backer shoulders; rigid, cocoon-like ponchos; and thigh-high platform leather boots was a showcase of sartorial exaggeration. It conveyed a sense of hell on Earth, the Twilight of the Gods—or in this case, of humanity. Owens is no stranger to post-apocalyptic ideas (darkness, in both the literal and figurative sense, is embedded in his brand), and in the era of COVID-19, this dystopian display feels reflective of our times.
